Do you feel that if it wasn’t for the last minute, you’d never get anything done?
Well, don’t feel all alone. Most everyone, including those with the most network marketing success, is guilty of procrastination at one time or another. We all know what needs to be done, yet we still spend our days (and much of our time and energy) looking for ways to escape responsibility.
Now, there’s nothing wrong with a little bit of escape once a while. But if you let procrastination run your life, you’ll never get anything of value done and you certainly won’t achieve the Network Marketing success you’re looking for.
You can’t wait until tomorrow to stop procrastinating. Today’s the only day and right now’s the only time you’ve have to stop putting things off until later. Here are some tips to help you break the habit. After all, that’s all procrastination is – a habit.
Acknowledge The Problem – First, admit that you have a bad habit that you need to break. Think about the ways procrastination messes up your life, and accept that if you really want to get what you want in life, you have to make a change.
Ask Questions – You’re getting some benefits from procrastinating. Discover what those benefits are and weigh them against the benefits you would get from not procrastinating. Ask yourself: Why is this a bad habit? What’s keeping me from changing? Who’s supporting me in this habit? What can I do to change?
Master Self-Discipline – Get on purpose. Be rigorous with self-control. Be tough on yourself and learn to say no to anything that is wasting your time.
Start Acting – Once you complete your analysis, stop thinking and get into action, start exposing prospects to your Network Marketing business.
Keep Things In Perspective – Don’t make mountains out of molehills. You can do anything you want. Just take building your Network Marketing business one day at a time and one step at a time.
Use The “Salami” Method – Slice all big projects into smaller pieces that can be handled easier. Work on each slice separately, if you don’t have leads maybe hook up with a system that can help you with that. I did, take a look at that system I use!
Don’t Wait For Inspiration – You’ll get nowhere if you wait to be in the mood before you start building your Network Marketing Business. Revisit why you want a successful Network Marketing business, really think about it and picture yourself already being there and then let the action itself inspire you even further by just taking the first step
Work In Spurts – Set aside small blocks of time – for example, one or two hours – to prospect, rather than long stretches of time. Allow yourself a short break between blocks listen to inspirational or educational material in between.
Set Timelines – Parkinson’s law states, “Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.” Always set timelines for completing each job or it will take as long to get done as the time you have available to do it. Set timelines for each slice of the “salami.”
Decide Where To Start – Some authorities say you should start with the easiest part of a job first and then move on to the more difficult parts. Others say just the opposite. If you are really serious about creating success in Network Marketing it is imperative that you spend at least 80% of your time prospecting, so start there, just start with getting 2 people a day to watch your business presentation do that for a week and then the next week add one more per day.
Eliminate Distractions – Turn off the TV or anything else that’s going to break your concentration. Avoid as much temptation as possible. That includes people as well as things. I found when I first started my Network Marketing business from home people thought I was available for a chat anytime of the day, and I found more and more I would get to the end of the day with little or no work done. That only changed when I disciplined myself to only take personal calls in a break I had scheduled. If you are allowing others to distract you must learn to politely say no to friends or family who want you to join them for a half-hour chat on the phone let them know you are seriously building a business!
Peter Drucker, a highly respected American management consultant once said, “It’s more important to do the right thing than to do things right.” Resist perfection. It’s often a major cause of procrastination.
Break the procrastination habit right now and you’ll be surprised how much you’ll get done and how much time you’ll have left over to really enjoy your life with none of the guilt procrastination usually festers.
One excuse I used for my procrastination was not having people to mastermind with. You see I can from the corporate world where we had formal weekly meetings where we would go through the objectives for the week and commit to getting particular things done and the time frame for doing them, I really missed that so I found myself a team mate and we now set clear objectives for each week.
The only way to overcome procrastination is to TAKE ACTION and if you want the success in Network Marketing that you say you do you must take that action now!
